Fusing Art with Commercialism: Creating the Faye Wong Package
Faye Wong has metamorphosed through multiple identities since she started in the Cantopop industry, trying to find who she is. At the start of the 90s she was known as Shirley Wong, singing the usual love songs, striking the usual photographic poses, and being the same as everyone else. Somewhere in the mid-90s, she changed both her Chinese and English name to Faye Wong, perhaps pushed forward by the marketing department in an attempt to recreate herself. Since the name change, Faye Wong has become an international success. Her specialty lies in fusing both the art and commerce of music. Faye's albums aren't the usual sappy ballads her female counterparts are accustomed to. She has managed to popularize new sounds and musical approaches into the mainstream. Some fans preferred her old way, and cite Faye would have been much better performing "normal" songs. Yes, but she has already tried that, and this niche she has filled herself couldn't have been more fitting. Sure, her music is a little out there, but on a creative level, she's more daring, mature, sexy and hypnotic than anyone else now.

Wishing her all the best
Allen Mah from Plymouth, UK on May 30, 2005
She's just brilliant! Not many artists could make an impact to the music industry like her. She impressed people's heart not only with her angelic vocal, but her way of keeping low profile and her personal philosophy as well. She's true to herself and she's doing whatever she wants - she is brave enough to do it - that's real music...choosing to live a happy life and not producing music and songs just for production sake, I wish her all the best in whatever she wants to do now - as it is significant enough for her impact to the music industry!

Quiet Beauty
Jake from Singapore on March 20, 2005
To me, Faye WOng epitomises the very best of Chinese pop, from the 90s right up to today. All too often, I've heard friends who complain that they prefer the old Faye circa 1997, when she sang "Sky" (Tian Kong) in that nonchalent lazy yodel. And they compare that with her more edgy (and some say noisier) music today. To these detractors, I have nothing to say but my sympathies for their limited music repertoire. Since the days of her commercial cantopop days, Faye has quickly moved from the dreamy tunes to electronica to grunge to rock to classical opera to trip hop and even jazz. All of these she showcased at her recent concert. To those who insist she has taken a turn downhill, I say "ha!" If nothing else, Faye has shown that she has progressed beyond all other singers, musically and otherwise. Her songs have become lyrically denser, more intelligent, and no longer bounded by the perimeters of mis-spent youth and lost love. She discussed religion, life, fate, and of cos love, albeit with more elegance than the typical formulaic love stories all other singers are so fond of doing these days. And the one thing I like about Faye is her thematic approach to her songs... she talks of a concept in this one album, and then picks it up again and expounds on it the next. And she never repeats, only develops, so the more we listen to her songs, the more we learn, of her and of the many perpectives she subtly infuses into her work. And above all, her style is the one factor that singles her out from the thousands of factory-manufactured pop singers of today. Watch any of her concert, and you will see why. She never deigns to pander to her audience with silly welcome speeches or lame jokes. She lets her music do the talking, and boy are we glad, because it is the music that defines her. She has three principles to her concert-- no guest singers, no dancers, no encore. Name me a singer who can stick to these three "nos" (considered a formula for big ticket losses) and still be able to hold sell-out concerts wherever, whenever. In Singapore, she spoke all of three times, a simple "hello" at the start of the concert, an apology at the middle when she missed the start of a song, and a "goodbye and thanks" at the end. And that alone is enough to leave us charmed until fans in denial scream for encore even after she has left the stadium and reached her hotel, and probably gotten into bed. It is this quiet elegance of Faye, her true talent that comes so naturally, her understated way of performing, that had drawn me to her music again and again. And every new album release of Faye is a new lesson in music, where she brings us to her playground, and astonishes us repeatedly with that clear crystal voice, playful melodies, and nonchalent yodelling that never fails to bring forth a smile of delight, and awe. To Faye, for being the greatest gift the Asian music scene has ever honoured.

tian kong --- sky
You can Bitch all you Want FAYE! from Singapore on March 3, 2005
This girl can sing!!!! I mean really!!!! The only thing regrettable about Faye is that there are too few singers in the Chinese music scene like her --- who I believe, can hold her own against any international pop star thrown her way! Even fewer --- or perhaps none at all --- combine such natural singing abilities with pin-up good looks and charismatic appeal but only Wong. Any man who has seen her strutting her stuff --- whether onstage or on MTV --- and claim to be able to resist her charms are either gay or lying!!! Quite honestly, I don't normally take to bitching kindly but when Faye pouts like a diva once in awhile, I even find that cute!!! I know...I know...Smitten as charged!

A beautiful woman that i ever see

I am meaning i am quite comfortablewith her every appearance.she can comes out with short hair and whatever, i felt quite normal and especialy when she have long hair...wow, i just can't think of wat to say to describe her beauty.she doesn't have to wear the luxuriest but already showing the attractiveness. I just hoping that she would be a beauty for ever which means i wish she would not getting old.

Unique

I have always been a Faye Wong fan even when I was living in Singapore. My sister had recently sent me Faye's latest CD album - "To Love", and I have fallen in love with her music all over again. Her lyrics have such great meaning in them, and her voice is heavenly. If you are reading this, Faye, you are a very unique and talented artiste. Keep it up!!
