APRIL 2, 2004 North American fans go online to remember Leslie Cheung Liz Chow Original article appeared in Chinese. Below is a translation. SING TAO DAILY [NEW YORK] - Time flies by. Yesterday marked the first year of legendary Leslie Cheung's death. In Hong Kong, thousands of fans grieved this legend and gathered at candlelight vigils for a minute of silence. But for overseas fans, they go online. North American station HKVP Radio is broadcasting Leslie's songs and interviews. More than 300 fans wrote in to the station to express their grief. "The meaning of April Fool's Day has completely changed for us" says Anni Lam, President of HKVP Radio. Since Leslie's suicide, the station has received thousands of letters from fans from all over the globe. A year later, fans still don't believe Leslie has departed. Because overseas fans are scattered around the world, there isn't a gathering event. A lot of fans go online and post their messages of sorrow. "During the 80s, after I emigrated from Hong Kong, Leslie and Anita Mui's music has been with me. I imagined that this era of legends would grow old together and spend their days playing mahjong, not to go like this. But, one year ago Leslie decided to leave us. I still can't believe it." A North American fan wrote, "A year later, I miss Gorgor even more." Anni Lam expressed that a lot of fans from North America wish to go back to Hong Kong to remember Leslie, especially to see the unveiling of the wax figure at [Madame Tussaud's] and to buy his CDs. Because the distance is so far, North American fans could only stay at home to watch his movies and go online to read the latest news from Hong Kong. HKVP Radio has been broadcasting Leslie's music nonstop, playing concerts from 1988 until 2000, including clips of artists who performed Leslie's songs. New York is one of Gorgor's favorite cities in the world. Each time Leslie toured in New York, he would stop by Chinatown. Yesterday, a record store employee on Elizabeth Street said only one customer came in to buy Leslie's DVDs. Compared to last year, there were far more customers shopping for Leslie's items. It's also been a rainy day, which explains the lack of customer traffic. The memorial atmosphere in New York Chinatown is not as great as in Hong Kong or Southeast Asia. But, Leslie's items are popular among Internet auction sites. HKVP Radio is broadcasting Leslie's hits all through today at www.hkvpradio.com. Fans can remember Leslie and his voice online.
