HKVP World Tour
3 Continents. 9 Cities. A Dinner Party in Each

Why is HKVP touring?...A Q&A with the Founder of HKVP Radio

What exactly is the HKVP World Tour?
Simply put, I'm flying to cities across the world to meet our listeners. We're doing this by throwing dinner parties. Our first stop is in San Francisco on Saturday, September 3rd.

Why is HKVP touring?
I got inspired by the touring industry. I'm very old-school, in that I believe artists build their fan base one city at a time. So I'm borrowing that concept for HKVP Radio. We're building a listener base one city or region at a time. It's particularly important for us because we mostly exist in the online world. By visiting our listeners, we're bringing HKVP Radio into the real world.

What's the purpose of this tour?
There's an important mission: to keep the good music alive. I don't make records, but I believe HKVP, in time, can influence them. The demand for solid music is there but our voice isn't heard. And that's what we're doing - gluing the voice and the market back together. We're also doing this because we love our fans. Reading fan mail is a thrill and I believe meeting listeners in person is even more exciting. I hope to touch somebody's life in every city I go to, and in turn, I hope that person goes out and touches someone else's life, by spreading the word about us. A huge part of our success is the community we've built. We're able to unite Cantopop fans from Kuala Lumpur to Los Angeles to Brazil who share common interests. We're creating an opportunity for these fans to meet in person and we're piecing the market back together. It's powerful.

Why is San Francisco your first stop?
Most of our listeners call the Bay Area home. We're starting there because it's our strongest market. I've also made a number of friends there through the HKVP forum and chat room so it's a logical place to begin. (Buy tickets)

Where is the next party after San Francisco and when?
The next party will be in Toronto in early 2006.

How is the turnout for the San Francisco party?
Luckily it has met my initial expectations. But like always, my target is a moving one and I hope to beat my expectations. Bigger is indeed better in this case!

What is the mood and tone of the party like?
At the heart of all the parties are great food, great wine, great conversationalists and great topics for discussion. We're all gathering to eat, dish and have a great time.

How soon will you complete the HKVP World Tour?
Personally, I love creating things to look forward to. I hope to complete this tour within a couple of years (time and budget allowing, of course), with a party held every few months. The exception would be Asia, where all 3 dates (Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore) would be held closely together. My destinations aren't limited to the 9 cities dotted on the map. The party may end up being wherever I happen to go.

What do you hope to accomplish by the end of this tour?
I hope to move and shake up the Chinese record business some day. We will be heard when we have thousands or perhaps millions of fans following HKVP's lead. It's really part of a much bigger plan I'm not ready to unveil yet. This isn't just about Cantopop oldies music anymore. It's about pumping back life into a dead industry, about going back to the basics for solid entertainment. I think we can do it.
